Virtual prototype for water leaks detection

Abstract

This paper presents a virtual prototype for detecting drinking water leaks in a piping system developed in MATLAB and Simscape. Equipment with characteristics provided by the manufacturers was parameterized to have a behavior attached to a real system. The system was integrated with storage tank, a centrifugal pump to recirculate water, flow, and pressure transmitters, as well as six control valves to simulate leaks at different locations in the pipeline. In the prototype, a leak detection algorithm based on high gain observers was implemented, which made it possible to detect leaks in three proposed scenarios.
