Differences between traditional and robotic rehabilitation on cognitive functions in patients with cerebral palsy

Keywords: cerebral palsy, visuospatial function, conventional gait therapy, work memory

Abstract

Cerebral palsy is frequently current as the most frequent motor and disabling impairment in the childhood stage, which is why the improvement of motor skills has been given the main importance in order to start the march early. The objective of the present work was to analyze whether there are differences between robotic and conventional stimulation in patients with CP aged 6 to 12 years using the Reynolds Intelligence Assessment test (RIAS). 44 files were reviewed, of which they were eliminated. The patients were already undergoing rehabilitation programs that were given twice a week at home (in the case of patients receiving conventional rehabilitation) and at the time of being evaluated they had 8 months of treatment. Visuospatial function, intelligence and memory were evaluated in two main groups, group CRIT Tijuana with children (n=15) of school age who received robotic gait training compared to children (n=15) with conventional training in General Hospital and DIF of Ensenada. Both groups were evaluated by Reynolds Intelligence Evaluation instrument (RIAS). The average value of the general index of the RIAS test after rehabilitation was and 56.46 for group traditional rehabilitation and 68.38 for group robot assisted rehabilitation, respectively. Statistical analysis showed statistically significant differences (U=50, p<.05) when compared index global for RIAS. Similar results were found in other categories of the test; verbal index [t(26)=2.1, p<.05], non-verbal index [t(27)=2.4, p<.05] and working memory  [t(27)=4.52, p<.001].
