Bencimidazolic N-heterocyclic carbenes of Ag and Au with antibacterial properties
Abstract
Chemical compounds known as N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been known for some years; however, the boom in its study in recent years derives from its various fields of application such as medicine. The use of noble metals such as silver (Ag) and gold (Au) has allowed enhancing the properties of these chemical species as antibacterial or anticancer agents. This paper presents the studies carried out on the synthesis and characterization of compounds chloro(1,3-bis(naphtalen-1-ylmethyl)benzimidazolyl)silver(I), [AgCl{BzNf2}] (2) y chloro(1,3-bis(naphtalen-1-ylmethyl)benzimidazolyl)gold(I), [AuCl{BzNf2}] (3) derived from 1,3-bis(naphthalenylmethyl)benzimidazole and their potential application in metallopharmaceuticals through preliminary tests in vitro of the compounds synthesized as antimicrobials in four bacteria: two Gram positive (Staphyloccoccus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and two Gram negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) by means of inhibition tests with the Kirby-Bauer method. The solid state structure of the precursor salt 1,3-bis(naphthalen-1-ylmethyl)benzimidazolium chloride {BzNf2}Cl (1) was confirmed by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study
