Evolution of the burden of diabetes in Mexico
Abstract
This paper presents a study on the burden of diabetes in the Mexican population between 2004 and 2014.
Rates of healthy years of life lost are estimated by gender, state, and age, using the weight of disability caused by complications. The results show that the rate of healthy years of life lost for women decreased by 13% and for men, it increased by 5%, between 2004 and 2014. For people with diabetes who did not report complications, the years of healthy life lost increased in this same period. By 2014, the central states of the country went from a low level to a medium-high level in the rates of years of healthy life lost, compared to 2004.
With these results, we conclude that it is necessary to have more and better information for good monitoring of the population with chronic diseases such as diabetes.
