Virtual Reality and pain in children and adolescents with cancer: a systematic review
Abstract
Pain in children and teenagers with cancer is the most frequent cause of pain. In recent years, the use of new technologies has been investigated as distraction techniques for the benefit of children and adolescents undergoing invasive procedures, but there is still a lack in this regard. Objective: to analyze by means of a systematic review the use of virtual reality as a technique to minimize pain in medical procedures in children and adolescents with cancer. Method: a search was carried out in PubMed, Cochrane and Google Scholar databases based on the PICO methodology. Studies conducted in a population under eighteen years of age and published in the last ten years were included. Results: 52 articles were initially identified, of which six met the inclusion criteria, finding that the use of virtual reality in medical procedures helps to decrease pain perception in children and adolescents with cancer. Conclusions: The results in this review suggest that Virtual Reality is an effective supportive technique to reduce pain in children and adolescents with cancer caused by medical procedures.
