Pyrite depression during collectorless flotation in the presence of potassium biphthalate

Keywords: pyrite, collectorless, flotation, biphthalate, depression

Abstract

Pyrite (FeS2) is an abundant mineral in Cu, Pb, Zn base metal sulfide deposits during separation, it floats indiscriminately contaminating the concentrate and causing economic or environmental problems. In this research, potassium biphthalate (BFT) was tested as a pyrite depressant reagent, an alternative to cyanide, which is widely used in the industry and can be toxic. The results show that during pyrite flotation at pH 6, 9, 11 and 12 with BFT amounts of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g/L, the FeS2 surface is generally depressed, but at pH 11.0 with 0.25g/L BFT and a pulp potential of -21 mV the pyrite is depressed to a greater degree, obtaining only 9.1% w/w of pyrite in the concentrate. This is because the surface adsorption of BFT on the pyrite surface changes the hydrophobic properties to a hydrophilic state. These surface characteristics were analyzed and validated by infrared spectroscopy, where the absorption of BFT is verified by the binding bands at 583  and 843 . In addition, the formation bands of iron oxyhydroxides such as lepidocrocite, akaganeite and goethite, identified with the signals at 482, 562 and 627 , respectively, are presented. As well as the presence of a strong binding band at 1131  assigned to the presence of free sulfate on the surface.
