Abstract

This essay analyzes the re-collection, cultivation and trade of vanilla. In Mexico since pre-Hispanic times, the Totonacos traded the vanilla, during the colonial period through the first half of the nineteenth century it was exported to many countries in Europe. In 1841, when the technique of hand pollination was discovered, several countries including France cropped the orchid known as Vanilla planifolia in their colonies. Since that time, Mexico stopped being the main exporter.
