Abstract

This article analyzes the process of Francisco Baez, which took place in 1594. This process is in the Inquisition field of the Archivo General de la Nación of Mexico.

Through the study of this class of documents, not only can we know how the Inquisition repressed heretics in New Spain, but also they allow us to know how the Jews practiced their suppressed religion, their social relationships and their mentality. Also, they show the battle that the Holy Office launched against the main enemy of the Catholic Church and the Crown, in the north of the Valley of Mexico in the late sixteenth century.
