Mechanism of action of propolis in the healing of oral soft tissues

Keywords: Healing, surgery, propolis, 3rd molars, inflammation

Abstract

In dental practice, extraction or surgery of 3rd molars is common, whether due to an infection such as pericoronitis, resorption of the 2nd molar, caries of the 3rd molar that is impossible to rehabilitate, etc. Therefore, it is important to have a good diagnosis and praxis, but a very important part of the treatment is the postoperative period where the patient will inevitably feel pain and be exposed to infections. For its part, propolis is a natural and efficient alternative in this type of wounds, since it has benefits such as; antimicrobial, antiviral, healing, anticoagulant. And speaking specifically of wound healing, there is an increase in the number of mature fibroblasts that synthesize collagen fibers. Likewise, it inhibits the granulation of mast cells, which results in the reduction of inflammatory exudate. There is also an increase in the mitotic index at the basal end of the epidermis and an increase in keratinization.
