Phlebitis: Basic Knowledge of Nursing Staff

Keywords: Types of phlebitis, diagnosis, nursing care

Abstract

Phlebitis is one of the adverse events related to nursing care in the application of peripheral intravascular catheters and as such it must be treated, to avoid more serious injuries in the patient. The objective of the study is for the nursing staff to learn what phlebitis is, the types of phlebitis that can occur, the etiology, risk factors specific to the patient, the signs and symptoms that the patient may present. The description of this topic is framed in comparative tables to identify and assess the degree of phlebitis, considering, among others, the Infusion Nurses Society's phlebitis assessment scale. The following will be useful to acquaint oneself with the good practices that facilitate nursing diagnosis according to the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA), and activities that contribute to the patient's recovery.
