Food Security at Home and glycemic control in diabetic patients
Abstract
Food Security refers to when there is "at all times, physical and economic access to sufficient food, safe and nutritious, to satisfy needs and preferences, leading to an active and healthy life"; and Food Security at Home is presented "when households have access to the quantity and variety of safe foods that their members require to lead an active and healthy life throughout the year." So poor access to food leads to Food Insecurity. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and food insecurity in the home may be associated with a greater risk of alteration in glycemic control due to various hypotheses: the first of them is that of the thrifty gene (which proposes an adaptation to be more efficient accumulation fat when food is hit or miss); secondly, it could be due to the fact that food insecurity could increase the difficulties of the diabetic patient to follow an appropriate diet; and the third explains that DM2 is highly sensitive to nutritional intake, so that a poor quality of intake can negatively affect the patient's glucose levels, regardless of nutritional status.
