Information technologies as mediators of interdisciplinary work: experiences between Psychology and Pediatric Dentistry

Keywords: Virtual Reality, Pediatric Dentistry, Distraction, Pain

Abstract

In Pediatric Dentistry, approximately one in seven individuals in the population experiences high levels of dental fear and anxiety, which influences oral health. Various pharmacological, behavioral or cognitive treatments have been used for its intervention with variable results (Aminabadi, et al. 2012). The literature for pain management in this population recognizes that distraction, through new technologies, is effective in reducing pain and improving the experience in dental treatments. Based on this, the experience of carrying out an interdisciplinary project between psychology and pediatric dentistry in which the use of Virtual Reality (VR) is applied as a distraction technique for pain management is described. The results in a patient are described and their relevance for the work between both disciplines facilitated by new information technologies is discussed
