Agrowaste valorization for estradiol remotion in water
Abstract
Water pollution is a primary issue, due to the presence of a variety of agents in wastewater as well as water bodies, causing relevant environmental problems. These contaminants include, among others, hormones, specifically estrogens where due to their exponential application in medicine and livestock humans and animals are not capable of metabolizing them completely, in fact these have been found water sources and still generating negative effects in the aquatic fauna. Consequently, the recovery of this kind of pollutants using sustainable adsorbent materials such as biochar, which is obtained from the thermal transformation from agricultural waste and its predominant composition is lignin, can represent a viable alternative for the elimination of estradiol (E2) in water, as they can have similar removal capacities as other carbonaceous materials whose treatment is more complex and expensive, therefore limiting an appropriate waste management
