Brief chronicle and application of two supporting criteria for the identification of a clinoptilolite

Abstract

The structural frames of Clinoptilolite and Heulandite are partially identical when analyzed with the X-ray diffraction technique. This has caused much confusion since the middle of the last century , so great efforts have been made to distinguish between the two structural frames. So great has this confusion become that the zeolite subcommittee of the International Mineralogical Association went so far as to declare a special rule for the naming of these zeolites . In this research paper, we introduce a brief chronicle of these efforts, as well as an explanation of the basic principles we apply in seeking to recognize between the two. The characterization of natural zeolite sample was carried out by means of the techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD) , scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis (SEM – EDS), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to determine the type of Heulandite series using the criteria of thermal stability, of the parameter  an the relation Si:Al. This work is intended to serve as a small guide to clarify the doubts that commonly confuse and therefore discourage those initiated in the study of this type of zeolite.
