Determination of the Physical-Chemical Characteristics of a Natural Zeolite

Keywords: Mordenite, Zeolite, Natural Zeolite, Characterization

Abstract

The Mordenite is a natural zeolite that due to its properties is one of the most common in various applications. Therefore, it is important to determine its mineralogical content, morphology, chemical composition and porosity properties. In this work, a physical and chemical characterization of a natural zeolite of the Mordenite type is presented, using the techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM - EDS) and analysis by means of N_2 adsorption. According to the XRD results, the crystalline phases Quartz, Feldspar and Mordenite are detected, being this last one the most abundant among them. It is shown by morphological characterization that the microcrystals observed by SEM are in accordance with the typical morphology of the Mordenite. The N_2 adsorption shows a type IIb isotherm, but instead of an H3 hysteresis it yields a type H4.
