Effect of silicon carbide (SiC) on the synthesis of manganese phosphate coatings deposite don 1020 steel

Abstract

In this project, the effect of incorporating silicon carbide particles in a manganese phosphate bath is analyzed to obtain coatings deposited on 1020 steel substrates. The coatings were made in a manganese phosphate bath by the method of chemical conversion. Mechanical characterization was carried out, in particular Rockwell hardness on the T scale, to determine the influence of SiC particles on this property. Likewise, the optimal concentration of SiC (0 to 2 g/l) was determined to obtain homogeneous and fracture-free coatings. Finally, the manganese phosphate coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, in order to study the morphology of the coatings and their homogeneity. According to the Rockwell hardness results, the incorporation of SiC particles in the coatings allows a 13% increase in hardness. Likewise, it was determined that with a concentration of 1.5 g/L of SiC particles, homogeneous coatings are obtained.
