Characterization of phycocyanins by mass spectrophotometry

Keywords: Cyanobacteria, Phycocyanin, Characterization, Mass spectrometry, Protein sequencing

Abstract

The characteristics of mass spectrometry (MS) have elevated it to a prominent position among analytical methods due to its unmatched sensitivity, detection limits, speed and its combination with chromatography (Milman, 2015). With the emergence of new needs, biotechnological applications of some protein complexes require detailed information about their structure and composition, which can be difficult to obtain for naturally occurring proteins (Kaldmäe et al., 2019). Important example is phycocyanin (PC), isolated from photosynthetic microorganisms. Rivera et al (2021), expose that this metabolite generates biological effects with high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic power and has even demonstrated antiviral potential and its possible use in disorders related to the COVID-19 outbreak. Despite its usefulness, structures and interactions of its core subunits are largely unknown. Therefore, a literature review of MS analysis was performed to reveal its stability and identify its architectural homologues.
