Abstract

Introduction: Depression is a health problem that affects the elderly silently. Objective: To determine the level of depression in the elderly. Methodology: descriptive, cross-sectional study, the sample consisted of 24 residents considering the inclusion criteria. They signed informed consent. An instrument that measures normal, moderately and severely depressed levels was applied. SPSS version 15 was used. Results: The average age was 79 years (SD = 4.3). 50% of residents are widower. Prevalence was found with 31% in Diabetes Mellitus and 15% in Hypertension. 21% are moderately depressed and 29% are severely depressed. Discussion and conclusions: Regarding Acosta (2007) found differences in results according to sex, this study observed higher prevalence in women. Borda (2013); Ruiz (2014) show similarities as there are more prevalent in those with a disease of chronic degenerative diseases. According to the results of females reported higher prevalence of depression.
