Extraction of ibuprofen with dicarboxylated hairy cellulose nanocrystals

Keywords: ibuprofen, extraction, dicaboxylated, cellulose, nanocrystals, hairy

Abstract

Cellulose is partially oxidized with sodium periodate to produce a dialdehyde known as "hairy cellulose". This type of cellulose is composed of a crystalline body, which provides physicochemical resistance, and amorphous cellulose chains at the ends which have allows chemical modifications. One of these modifications is made with sodium chlorite which selectively oxidizes the aldehydes producing dicarboxylic nanocrystalline cellulose (DCCN), this material with high electrostatic charge has been used mainly for the extraction of metals and to a lesser extent for organic compounds. For this reason, in this work it was used as a sorbent for the extraction of ibuprofen. Different conditions such as pH, initial concentration, sorbent mass and the presence of other drugs (naproxen and diclofenac) were evaluated. At pH 7 using 10 mg of DCCN it was possible to retain more than 80% of the drug in aqueous solution and with a capacity of 176.7 mg·g-1.
