Aquaculture: An overview
Abstract
Aquaculture is the active cultivation of fishery products. It has become increasingly important from an economic point of view because almost all around the world there are favorable hydrological, topographical and edaphological conditions to develop this activity successfully. However, as any other activity, aquaculture has positive and negative impacts, mainly in the aquatic environment, because it consumes large volumes of water. On the other hand, if nutrient-rich aquacultural effluents are discharged without any treatment, they can impair the quality of the aquatic receiving bodies.
This mind map presents different aspects of this activity, such as the diverse problems generated and some alternatives to solve them. Also, the Mexican shrimp aquaculture (Sonora case) is approached, as well as its importance, the industry development, successes, failures and the alternatives to become a sustainable activity.
