Selenium nanoparticles in agriculture for ruminant feed and greenhouse gas reduction

Keywords: nanotechnology, nanoparticles, selenium, agriculture, animal nutrition, greenhouse effect

Abstract

Nanotechnology has shown promising potential to promote agriculture. Nanotechnology has allowed the use of nanoparticles (NPs) as a green and ecological alternative for the sustainable management of phytopathogenic diseases, such as trying to replace chemical pesticides that affect both the environment and human health, raises the need for new methods and more suitable for agricultural production. There are studies that demonstrate the benefits NPs of Se in the beneficial physiological response in the development and performance of plants. In addition, to show effects against some pathogenic organisms that commonly occur in crops. On the other hand, Se in plants modifies plant metabolism, potentiating the enzymatic activity of phenylalanine ammonium lyase (PAL), increasing phenolic compounds in forage plants for animals, it can generate changes in ruminal fermentation, having an effect on the microbiota since these phenolic compounds can bind to the cell wall of microorganisms causing morphological changes or secretion of extracellular enzymes that cause changes in their metabolism and promote the reduction of greenhouse gases produced by ruminal fermentation (CO2 and CH4 ), which are accumulated in the atmosphere that affect and result in climate change. Therefore, there are investigations that have found a positive correlation with the increase of phenolic compounds in plants due to the supply of Se and the effect on the reduction of greenhouse gases.
